這首歌的歌詞原來是首印地安詩，背後的故事據說是這樣的：

一位印地安男子在妻子過世後了無生趣，準備帶著兒子一起追尋妻子的腳步而去，

就在整理愛妻遺物的時候，發現她寫了一首詩，

內容將逝者化作親人身邊的風、雪、陽光和星辰，

告慰親人別再佇立於墳前哭泣，自己並沒有離去，而是以另一種姿態繼續守護著所愛。

男子哀傷的心獲得撫慰，也打消了自殺的念頭。

因為這首詩的意境優美深刻，在歐美和日本都分別被譜上不同的旋律傳唱。

在美國，［A Thousand Winds］曾被用在911的追悼會上朗誦，也被譜成合唱曲；

而在日本，則被新井滿翻成日文歌詞，譜上曲，並由聲樂家秋川雅史演唱。
